Warren Hardy Umshler was born on January 3, 1923, in Shelby, Nebraska.  He was the oldest of the seven children born to Vera Hardy Umshler and Walter Umshler. Warren graduated from the Osceola (Nebraska) High School in 1941 where he participated in basketball and swimming.Shortly after high school, Warren felt a calling to serve our country and enlisted in the Marines.  He served in the Pacific area, Guadalcanal, New Caledonia, China, Guam, the British Solomon Islands and numerous other places. While stationed at Henderson Field on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, enemy Japanese surface and air forces launched an attack on Henderson Field during nighttime hours on October 13-14, 1942.  The men in Umshler’s platoon could hear “washing machine Charlie” flying low and soon the bombing started.  A heavy enemy shell struck dangerously close to a bomb shelter burying five Marines under a mass of earth and debris.Private First Class Umshler, hearing cries for help, voluntarily exposed himself to the intense fire of hostile shells and bombs.  Umshler and some other men immediately ran to their aid and began rescuing their imprisoned comrades. Two of the buried men were saved and the bodies of the other three Marines were recovered.  For his heroic efforts, Umshler was awarded the Silver Star for bravery. While in the service, Warren suffered a gunshot wound to his hip and abdomen and was sent back to the states for medical assistance.  After his recovery, he was stationed at Miramar in San Diego, California. On December 24, 1943, Warren married his high school sweetheart, Genevieve Hart-son, who he always called ‘Jen’ – specifically with a “J”.  And she always, always called him ‘Hardy’.  They were married in Santa Ana, California, after Warren received written permission from his mother to be married as he wasn’t of legal age and didn’t want to wait ten more days until he turned 21.After his marriage, he was again sent overseas.  While stationed overseas, their first child, Skip, was born back in Nebraska.  Father and son didn’t get to meet until several months later when Warren was discharged from the Marines.  He had a lot to be thankful for at that time – his life … his wife … and a new son.Warren received an honorable discharge from the United States Marine Corps on July 1, 1946, attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant. After his discharge from the service, Warren enrolled in the California School of Mortuary Science at Fullerton.Upon completion of school and obtaining his embalming license in both California and Nebraska, he took a position with a funeral home in Walthill, Nebraska. It was during this time that their daughter, Sherry, was born.  Shortly after her birth, they moved to Chadron where Warren had accepted a position with Reed Hardware and Funeral Home.  Another few years passed and Warren and Jen welcomed another daughter to their family when Cam was born in Chadron. After several years, Warren took a position with the Department of Roads as he wanted to work in the outdoors.  All the while he worked for the Department of Roads, he kept his embalming license and often assisted Erlewine-Hartman Funeral Home as needed.Warren retired as an engineer with the Department of Roads after over 30 years of faithful employment. While younger, Warren was involved in numerous civic organizations and spent many hours with the youth baseball program in Chadron.  He also was a basketball referee and officiated at the Harlem Globetrotter exhibition game in Chadron. In retirement, Warren kept busy with volunteer work at the American Legion Club in Chadron, the V.A. Hospital in Hot Springs, South Dakota, and many other volunteer others.  If he was needed, he was there. He was a good neighbor, often shoveling snow for neighbors younger than he.  He was always willing to help whenever somebody had a need.He was an extremely modest man and never spoke of his accomplishments.  The only boasting he did was of his children and grandchildren.  But his family is and always was proud of him and wanted to share a small portion of the love and pride for the man they call husband, dad and grandpa.Warren died on July 21, 2008, at the age of 85 years.  He is survived by Jen, his loving and faithful wife of over 64 years, and his children:  son, Skip and wife Beverly, of Mount Vernon, Missouri; daughter, Sherry Cacy and husband Mike, of Arapahoe, Nebraska; and daughter, Cam Stoye and husband Fred, also of Arapahoe, Nebraska; and by eleven grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.He is also survived by his brother, Walter Umshler, Jr., and wife Joyce, of Shelby, Nebraska, and his sister, JoAnne Collingham, of York, Nebraska.A prayer service was held on July 23 at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron officiated by Dr. Russ Seger of the First Congregational Church.Graveside services were held on July 25 at Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell, Nebraska, with Norval Holtmeier, North Platte American Legion Chaplain, officiating.  Military honors were provided by the United States Marine Corps and the rifle volley was given by the North Platte American Legion Honor Guard.  Taps was performed by granddaughters, Molly McNulty and Courtney Freiburger, preceded by grandson, Michael Cacy, with a military drum roll.  Pall bearers were Mike Cacy, Fred Stoye, Michael Cacy, Jonathan Stoye, Dominic Freiburger and Bob Slaymaker.Warren Hardy Umshler will be greatly missed by anyone who ever knew him.  Semper Fi to our favorite Marine.

Leo Ernest Steinbrink, age 96, of Elwood, Nebraska died July 10, 2008 at the Elwood Care Center.  He was born March 27, 1912, on the Steinbrink homestead in rural Gosper County, Nebraska, to Phoebe L (Lewis) and Frederick E. Steinbrink.  He lived with his brothers and sisters on the farm northwest of Elwood, Nebraska, until he was a young man.  He attended Brace country school until he completed the eighth grade, at which time his father determined that no farm boy needed further education. Although that may have been the end of his formal education, Leo was a life time reader and particularly enjoyed the study of the Bible.     On May 23, 1936, Leo and Ona Baisinger were married at the Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Dawson County, Nebraska.  Rising gas prices caused them to turn their wedding rehearsal into the real thing, thus saving both sets of parents, the bride and groom, and their witnesses the expense of driving to Lexington the following day as planned.     The drought of the 30’s brought an early end to the new couple’s farming on the land  owned by Leo’s grandfather Perry D. Lewis in Phelps County.  Leo found work with the Goodheart Construction Company; his first site was the ‘new’ school in Eustis, Nebraska.  This work took the couple to O’Neill and Omaha in Nebraska.  From there the construction company began to build post offices in California, Oregon, and Idaho.  Leo became the superintendent on these poured-concrete buildings.  While working in Riverside, California, Leo became a father for the first time when their daughter Carolyn was born.      After leaving construction, Leo brought his small family back to Elwood.  While waiting to be drafted into military service during World War II, Leo began to farm with his father in law.  Upon the unexpected death of  Frank Baisinger, Leo took over the management of the Baisinger land.  Farming was deemed an occupation essential to the war effort, feeding a nation and its military, and Leo was not drafted.     Leo’s son Allen was born in the years following the war.  The family remained on the Baisinger land.  When a tornado destroyed many of the farm buildings, Leo and Ona bought the land and began the efforts to modernize the farm – new out buildings, new house, electricity, and terracing of the land were among their efforts.     Leo kept informed of new developments in farming and worked whenever possible to incorporate new practices in his stewardship of the land.  He was interested in preserving the quality of the soil and its wildlife.  Much of the pasture land remained virgin sod and wildlife was encouraged and protected long before concerns of environment were in vogue.     Through the many years Leo was a member and a leader of the First Christian Church locally and state-wide.  Leo served on the Gosper County Soil and Water Conservation District Board for fifteen years and was chairman of the board for eight years.  In 1972 Leo was elected to the Board of Directors of Central Nebraska Public Power District and served for more than ten years.        Leo remained on the farm for more than fifty years, when failing health caused him to leave.  He spent his last years in the Elwood Care Center.  He was delighted with visits from family and friends, often entertaining them by playing his harmonica.     Preceding him in death were:  Ona, his wife of fifty-seven years, his parents, his brothers and sisters and their spouses:  James C. Steinbrink and Lillian, Abigail (Steinbrink) Dreher and Emil, Mary (Steinbrink) Laughter and Brooks, George H. Steinbrink and Ethel, Myrtle (Steinbrink) Smith and Dewy, Emily Steinbrink, Baby Boy Steinbrink, Alice (Steinbrink) Dreher and Cal, Elda (Steinbrink) Burch.  Velma Steinbrink, Charles Steinbrink and Delores, and Earl Steinbrink and Frances.     Mourning his death are: daughter, Carolyn Steinbrink of Shenandoah, Iowa, Allen Steinbrink and his wife Geri of Arapahoe, Nebraska, grandson Nathaniel Steinbrink and his wife Cortney Boyd of Carbondale, Illinois, and grandson Jonathan Steinbrink of Tucson, Arizona, a sister-in-law Doris Baisinger, special friends Richard and Marilyn Schroeder of Golden, Colorado, and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.    Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in Elwood.  Condolences may be shared at berrymanfuneralhome.com     Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the First Christian Church in Elwood with Sharon Corder officiating.  Burial was in the Elwood Cemetery.     Berryman Funeral Home in Cozad was in charge of arrangements.
