Author on Republican River flood to be in Arapahoe July 25

The Arapahoe Pubic Library welcomes Joy Hayden, author of the book The 1935 Republican River Flood. Ms. Hayden will be giving a presentation and showing pictures from the 1935 flood and signing copies that are for sale. As explained in the acknowledgements of her book Ms. Hayden explains, “I spent many hours researching the flood in communities all along the river. I discovered that while several self-published books had been written, no recent account of the flood told the story from its beginning in Colorado and Kansas through its rampage in Nebraska to its final end in Kansas. I was fortunate to visit with many survivors-some of whom have since passed away-who provided firsthand information about the event all along the river.” The book is dedicated to all of those that lost their lives during the 1935 flood. Please join us on July 25th at 10 am in the Prairie Pines dining room.

  1. I hunted pheasant in the Arapaho area in 1972 for 4 days.

We were there from Ohio ( 6 of us ) the motels were all full and we were eating at a restaurant and some local residents named Hockemyer overheard us talking about not having a place to stay near the town. They invited us to stay at their house which if I recalled was south of the main business district. They were an older couple and just so friendly – the mom cooked us breakfast and dinner they asked for 10.00 per day per man which was more that fair at the time. I have often thought about them.
