Library celebrates Dr. Seuss’s birthday

suess library 1The staff at the Arapahoe Public Library got into the spirit of Dr Suess’s birthday with a “Suess-abration.” Lisa Watson and Benita Adams dressed up as Thing 1 and Thing 2 from “Cat in the Hat.”  All the elementary and junior high joined in the celebration at the library on Febuary 24.  The library then had a photo contest with each individual class posted on the  library Facebook page. The class with the most “likes” for their class picture would win a cupcake party. It looks like the 5th graders will be getting a cupcake reading party!

Fundraiser for Arapahoe Food Pantry to be held

Through the idea of an Arapahoe Christian Church parishioner, the upcoming fundraiser for the Arapahoe Area Food Pantry was born. Contact was then made with the First United Methodist Church and from there all Arapahoe churches were invited to participate.
The fundraiser will be held on Monday, March 9th from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Ella Missing Community Center.  Homemade soup and desserts are on the menu and attendees are asked to make a free will donation or donate a food item. Everyone is invited.
The Arapahoe Area Food Pantry will celebrate it’s 30th birthday this year having opened in the spring of 1985.
According to the original board member, Leon Riepe, Trinity Lutheran Church  had an economic crisis committee that had exhausted it’s resources.  Church member Lillian Mueller suggested that the community could benefit from a food pantry.  A committee was formed and all Arapahoe churches were invited to have a representative and as they say, the rest is history.
Food pantry board member  today are Howard Davis, president; Lary ten Bensel, vice president; Elaine Swanson, secretary; and Marge Braithwait, treasurer.  Board members at large are Georgene Carskadon,  Opal Coakley, Lorris Haarberg, Joan Mowry, Cathy Weber and Shawna Welch.
The Arapahoe Area Food Pantry is located at 210 7th Street and serves approximately 20 families per month. They are open every Tuesday and Friday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m.
